After graduating high school in Comanche, Oklahoma Stephen attended Rose State College in Midwest City, OK and worked as a registered respiratory therapist. Stephen then attended the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK and obtained a degree in funeral service. After graduation he worked as an embalmer and funeral director for a large family owned funeral home in Oklahoma City and eventually became manager of their operations. In 2000 Stephen and his wife, Ruth, purchased Chaney’s Funeral Home of McAlester, OK and Jones Funeral Home of Wilburton, OK. In December of 2009 Ruth and Stephen purchased Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory in McAlester. Stephen serves as licensee in charge of Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory. Stephen recently completed over 130 contact hours of specialized embalming and reconstructive training as part of Fountain National Academy's continuing education seminars. He received instruction for advanced postmortem surgery and reconstruction. Stephen is often called upon to prepare a deceased that has severe traumatic injuries and disfiguring facial injuries. Reconstructive techniques are sometimes necessary to achieve an acceptable appearance and enable viewing by family and friends. Stephen and his wife Ruth have been married twenty-one years and have three children: Cade, Olivia and Racer Harkins. Stephen is a member of the McAlester Lions Club and attends a local church.
